The distant horizon has always intrigued me. Perhaps it represents a memory, a mood, a metaphor of moving into the future, or paying homage to the past. My work is of a minimalist nature, as I am mainly interested in the distillation of the landscape, to reveal it's essence. Living near the beach and memories of my travels are consistent inspirations, and greatly influence my art.
Pastels are known for their brilliant reflective quality and pure pigments. Working intuitively, I choose to soften that quality with intentional over-blending, the blurred effects suggesting the fleeting passage of time. Layer upon layer of pure pigment is applied with a rythmic motion, creating subtle depth. Thoughtfully, I search for a suggestion of a horizon line, then work to explore, exploit, and refine the painting, until enough has been said.
